How often do children need their eyes tested?

  • Standard eye exam –  annually
  • Comprehensive eye exam –  before 1st grade and continuing until adulthood.
  • Proper vision is essential for children’s success in life and academics. Beyond just seeing what’s in front of them at school, visual skills are needed for social, cognitive, and motor skill development. If children are experiencing a vision issue, they are often unable to articulate the problem—they might not even know there is a problem. Unlike adults, children have not established a baseline of what proper vision looks like for them. Bringing your child for regular eye exams lets us establish that baseline so we can take the time to evaluate their symptoms. By detecting vision problems early on, we can give them appropriate support—whether they need glasses or other personalized care. 

Kids can experience signs or symptoms that may not seem visual:

  • tiredness, poor concentration, or difficulty keeping their place while reading.
  • learn at a slower rate than their peers and struggle to keep up in class

How often do kids and adults with diabetes need their eyes tested?

  • Annual comprehensive eye exam recommended.
  •  Close examination of the retina can help to detect any early signs of serious vision problems. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in adults. People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk of developing vision problems.

Visual issues caused by diabetes may include conditions like:

  • Blurry vision – your body adjusting to diabetes medication or changes in your health routine can lead to blurry vision
  • Buildup of fluid in the eyes causing the eye’s lens to swell. Elevated blood sugar can lead to the extra fluid, normally it is temporary, and your eyes will return to normal as your blood sugar stabilizes.
  • Diabetic retinopathy often progresses slowly and may not present visible symptoms until irreversible vision loss occurs. The blood vessels in your retina swell as blood sugar levels elevate. In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, blurry vision is a common symptom. As the condition progresses, it gets more serious. Blood vessels break and bleed, leaking into the macula and causing vision loss.
  • Diabetic macular edema occurs when the macula swells due to leaking fluids from your retina’s blood vessels. The macula is responsible for your central vision, so impairment can impact the ability to read, write, drive, and recognize faces. This condition is quite serious and can lead to blindness.

Kids and teens looking for easier lens care may prefer disposable soft contact lenses, these lenses are worn once, so there are no extra steps to disinfect or store the lenses.

We prioritize taking the time to get to know you and your family. We will ask questions about your health, current medications, lifestyle, and family history to help us assess your risk factors for eye diseases or other vision conditions.


We measure your visual acuity (how clearly you can see) to determine whether you need corrective lenses, or if your prescription is up-to-date if you already have them


Eye muscle function and coordination test to see how well your eyes work as a team

Home remedies for dry eyes

Try the following:

  • Warm compresses: can help produce more tears, relieve pain and swelling, and unclog meibomian glands.
  • Reduce screen time: Prolonged screen time can cause eye issues like dryness, strain, and weariness
  • Eyelid wash: Use a gentle cleanser, like baby shampoo, to massage into the base of your eyelids to remove any crustiness.
  • Blinking: Helps restore moisture and clear the eye surface.
  • Eat oily fish and omega-3 fatty acids: can stimulate tear production and are found in fish, flaxseed, and chia seeds.
  • Stay hydrated: drinking enough water helps fuel tear production, which is 98% water.
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses
  • Use a humidifier: can make a difference when eyes feel dry.

Contact lens care and hygiene

Contact lenses sit directly on the cornea, so you’ll need to follow your optometrist’s instructions carefully to help keep your eyes healthy. Serious infections can be associated with contact lens wear, so hygiene is of the utmost importance.

Kids and teens looking for easier lens care may prefer disposable soft contact lenses. These lenses are worn once, so there are no extra steps to disinfect or store the lenses.

Contact lens wearers of all ages can prevent infections by doing the following:

  • Remove your lenses before you go to sleep.
  • Book annual, comprehensive eye exams to check that your eyes are still tolerating lenses well.
  • Don’t shower, use a hot tub, or go swimming while wearing contact lenses.
  • Replace and care for your lenses by following your optometrist’s instructions.
  • If you have lenses that need to be cleaned, only use the recommended contact lens solution – never tap water.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly before inserting or removing lenses.

Digital eye strain symptoms and prevention

There are a few common symptoms associated with digital eye strain, including:

  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Eye strain
  • Blurry vision
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Often, symptoms will alleviate when you take a solid screen time break. But, the discomfort will return once you’re in front of a digital device again.

To find long-term relief, you’ll need to implement some prevention strategies. Adjusting your work area, taking intentional screen breaks, and ensuring you have sufficient lighting while using your digital device are all strategies that can help reduce digital eye strain.

  • Office (or classroom) ergonomics and proper posture can help keep you comfortable while using digital devices. While you’re at your desk, be sure to sit upright with your feet flat on the floor. Your shoulders should not be rounded or hunched, and your neck should align with your torso.
  • Keep devices at eye level and your keyboard and mouse near enough to prevent reaching.
  • Remind kids to keep their backs lined up with their chairs, or imagine keeping their backs straight as a tree.
  • If you’re reading on your digital device, increase the font size to minimize squinting.Contrast and color tones should also be set to maximize your comfort.
  • Talk to your child about what font size feels most comfortable for them and help them make appropriate contrast adjustments.
  • The light levels both in the room around you and on your device can help prevent digital eye strain. Turn down your screen’s brightness to match the lighting levels of your surroundings. If the light from the room reflects on your screen, the glare can also contribute to eye strain.
  • Anti-glare screens are available for your device’s display, and glasses with an anti-reflective coating can help.
  • Remind your kids to turn on the lights in dark rooms to avoid tired eyes.
  • Increased device use also means kids are spending more time indoors. The World Health Organization recommends limiting screen time for children and encouraging them to play outside instead.

20-20-20 RULE:
When you’re concentrating on your work, it might be challenging to take a break, but following the 20-20-20 rule can help to relax your eyes. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps give your eyes a chance to refocus, reducing strain. Set a reminder on your phone or set up parental controls on your kid’s device for scheduled breaks and screen time limits.
